Whenever my mother wanted my siblings and myself out from under foot, she would send us out to the back yard, saying "Find Mommy a lady bug, cause Mommy needs the luck today." We would search forever for one tiny lady bug, and many times with no luck.

The years passed and Mama and Papa grew old and ill. I moved them to the town I live in to help care for them; three months into the new arrangement, Mama passed away unexpectedly in her chair in the living room. The day I returned to her house to pack up her things, the entire wall of the house was covered in lady bugs swarming around the window, next to the chair where Mama sat. I took comfort in that, knowing Mama was letting me know she was fine.

When I am at a low point in my life now, I will find a lady bug in the most unexpected places. Once I found one on my living room ceiling in the dead of winter! I always take a lady bug sighting as a special sign that though I am unable to hug my mother, she still sends her love and luck my way. Dan
